YOGA FOR EVERYBODY: USING PROPS TO CREATE A PRACTICE THAT WORKS FOR YOU, NOT AGAINST YOU

Sis, I’m sure you’ve heard all the recommendations under the sun to manage symptoms and find comfort in your body. It can make it hard to know what actually works right?! I’ve learned that finding ways to manage my symptoms and maintain my physical and mental well-being is crucial. Especially on those harder days when I need a little extra TLC. For me, yoga has been a big resource. 

As a yoga teacher, I understand that getting started can feel intimidating, especially when you’re dealing with varying symptoms, limitations and fatigue. That’s why I want to share with you the importance of using props in your yoga practice, and how they can help make yoga work for your body, not against it.

Props can provide extra support, stability, and help you maintain proper alignment without putting unnecessary strain on your body.


Why Use Props in Yoga?

Using props in yoga is not a sign of weakness or inability. It’s actually a sign of intelligence and awareness of your body’s capacity, which we know can fluctuate from day to day. Props can provide extra support, stability, and help you maintain proper alignment without putting unnecessary strain on your body. This is especially important for the times we experience pain, numbness, and tingling in our limbs.

Types of Props to Use:

Let’s be real, sometimes we need a little extra help getting to those hard-to-reach places or maintaining balance. By incorporating props into your practice, you can reduce the risk of injury and increase your sense of confidence and ability, while still receiving the full benefit of what yoga can offer.

There are many types of props available to use in your yoga practice, including:

  • Blocks: Perfect for helping you reach, bring the ground closer or maintain alignment in poses.

  • Straps: Useful for deepening stretches or providing extra support in twists and bends.

  • Blankets and Bolsters (Pillows): Great for providing extra support and comfort during restorative yoga or savasana. 



Tips for Using Props:

  • Don’t be afraid to experiment with different props and see what works best for you. 

  • Start slow and gentle. Try not to push yourself too hard or too fast. Perfection isn’t required.

  • Listen to your body! If you’re feeling uncomfortable or experiencing pain, take a pause and adjust as needed.


Remember, yoga is for everyone, regardless of your age, ability, or mobility. By embracing the use of props, we can empower ourselves to take control of our health and wellness journey, even on tough days. So, don’t be afraid to get creative and experiment with different props. I promise your body will thank you!
